Tobe Crest is a defense lawyer. He is hired by an unknown benefactor to defend Goliath in court.
History[]
During pre-trial deliberations, Crest presented himself to Judge Ian Roebling as counsel for Goliath, the plaintiff, while Margot Yale represented the state. Crest, who objected to Goliath being held at Rikers without charge, objected to Yale's characterization of gargoyles as animals more fit to be held at the Bronx Zoo. Roebling eventually ruled to have a trial to determine whether Goliath, and other gargoyles, possess sentience in order to possess civil rights equivalent to human beings, including to stand trial and testify in court.
Crest visited Goliath's cell at Rikers. Crest suggested inviting character witnesses to testify about Goliath and the Gargoyles from a sympathetic stance. Goliath was open to the idea, suggesting Halcyon Renard and (temporarily) David Xanatos, but excluded Elisa from consideration. Goliath asked who paid for Crest to take up his defense, but Crest replied that he was not at liberty to divulge.[1]
Crest represented Goliath in the trial. After Halcyon and Renqvist's testimonies were turned against Goliath by Yale, Crest calls Elisa as a rebuttal witness (against Goliath's wishes). After Elisa's testimony, including her public confession of love for Goliath, was undermined by Yale, Crest rested his case and initially waved a closing statement, but after Yale offered a blunt closing statement, Crest offered a statement in rebuttal attesting to the civil rights history of African Americans like himself. Robeling ruled that Goliath and other Gargoyles possess sentience and that gargoyles qualify for human rights, and ordered Goliath's immediate release from custody. Walking outside of the courthouse, Crest and Goliath acknowledged that the case would only be the first of more challenges to the gargoyles' dignity, while also embracing the victory in the case.
Characteristics[]
