Thailog was conceived when a Steel Clan robot was activated by Xanatos for the specific purpose of opening wounds in Goliath's skin. Goliath destroyed the robot as Elisa looked on, but not before it scratched bloody lines down his chest. Owen Burnett showed up right on cue, and treated the wound, and in doing so, extracted blood samples, complete with DNA. He told Goliath and Elisa that the robot had activated due to a freak overload in it's power matrix. They believed the lie, and the incident was forgotten.
Over the next 19 weeks, Sevarius used the genetic material to create Thailog. His maturation process was accelerated, artificially aging him Thus Thailog was "born" in 1995 with a fully grown gargoyle body and a keen, advanced, if twisted, mind.in a matter of months. He was also subliminally educated with Xanatos's unique "slant" on things, which included a well-developed business sense, a very keen and cunning mind, and a willingness to do anything for profit and to fulfill his desires.
When Thailog was released, fully grown, he did not hold well with the fact that he was grown to be a pawn of Xanatos or as Sevarius' private guinea pig. He wanted to get out into the world and have the resources to do something with himself. He also wanted to see what his "father" Goliath was like. Using all his skill coming from his other "father" Xanatos, he concocted an ingenious plan.
Thailog drew Elisa Maza, whom he knew presumably had contact with Goliath though Xanatos' files, Broadway, and Lexington to Black Rock Point. He then assaulted them, and they, thinking he was Goliath, confronted Goliath about it later at the clocktower. The Manhattan Clan decided to investigate. Thailog manipulated Xanatos and Sevarius into coming to the oil rig offshore Black Rock Point, where he captured the two men who were arguing over Thailog's disappearance, Xanatos thinking Sevarius had betrayed him, Sevarius thinking he was acting under Xanatos' orders. Thailog also captured Goliath and Elisa who were investigating Xanatos' interests in the oil rig.
Xanatos and Goliath encouraged him to join their respective parties, but Thailog did not want to live on Xanatos' terms or join the Manhattan Clan merely to protect a city infested with "inferior humans". He planned to destroy all of his "fathers" in a blaze of glory, setting the oil tanker ablaze and leaving him with 20 million dollars of ransom money to see his dreams through. He then left them to die.
The group managed to escape but Goliath came back to try and convince Thailog one last time to join him. Thailog responded by trying to fight him, and in the ensuing struggle, they set the entire rig ablaze. Goliath was blown off the rig in an explosion, unable to reach Thailog, and he presumed him dead, to his sorrow.
Later that week, it occurred to Xanatos that if he had been in that same position, he would've come up with a contingency plan, which meant, Thailog may have faked his own death, and gotten away clean with 20 million dollars of his money.
Weeks later, Goliath and the Avalon travelers met Thailog in Paris. He and Demona had taken each other as mates, and had plotted to capture MacBeth to inherit his wealth. Together Thailog and Demona had formed Nightstone Unlimited. However, Thailog secretly double-crossed Demona and handed Macbeth a weapon, expecting both of them to kill each so he could inherit both their fortunes and make himself financially on par with Xanatos. Elisa managed to prevent this from happening by shooting Macbeth, which didn't kill as the Weird Sisters' spell made so that Macbeth and Demona can kill each other. Demona escaped with Thailog, unaware of his betrayal.
Thailog and Demona later re-appeared in New York, this time teamed with Sevarius, in order to clone the Manhattan Clan and persuade Angela to join her mother and the Clones. When Demona betrayed Thailog in order to save her daughter, he revealed a clone he'd secretly commissioned Sevarius to make, Delilah, formed from both Demona and Elisa's DNA, whom Thailog intended for his new mate (he had already decided to dispose of Demona, whom he considered too much of a loose cannon). The scheme proceeded according to plan, until Thailog, having captured the clan, ordered Angela's death; Demona protested this, and after learning about Delilah, furiously turned on him. The two wound up fighting each other in the middle of a burning roller coaster at Coney Island, where Thailog appeared to perish.
Thailog survived however, and soon after attacked the Labyrinth. After regaining control of the clones, he took them to the Eyrie Building under the pretense of coming to reclaim Delilah. He was confronted by Goliath and Owen Burnett, the latter confiscated Thailog's weapons in exchange for bringing him Delilah. But, treacherous as ever, Thailog stabbed Goliath in his abdomen with a hidden blade in his gauntlet. Thailog then proceeded to torture Goliath before Elisa and the rest of the gargoyles arrived, whereupon Thailog made sure to slash each and every one of them with a series of pristine blades in his rotating gauntlets. The battle ceased when Delilah arrived, stating she had no intention of siding with Goliath or Thailog. Most of the clones returned to the Labyrinth with her, except for Brentwood, who chose to return to Nightstone Unlimited with Thailog.
Thailog met Sevarius and revealed that his plan was a complete success, and that his real objective was to collect DNA samples from all the gargoyles as well as Elisa (which is why each opponent was struck with a clean blade which was thereafter retracted for storage). The defection of Brentwood and the severe wounding of Goliath were simply incidental additional achievements in the mission. At that moment, Shari appeared, offering to become Thailog's new executive assistant. At first, Thailog appeared ready to kill her, but upon spotting an Illuminati pendant on her, he dismissed Sevarius and Brentwood, and greeted Shari as a member of the Illuminati, which he had recently joined as a lower echelon member. He then took Shari into his service.
For several nights, Thailog listened intently as Shari told him stories about the history of the Stone of Destiny. He was also brought in by Falstaff to speak to Yama and Fang over a videoscreen in an effort to recruit the Redemption Squad into the Illuminati (though at first Yama mistook him for Goliath and thought the color on the screen needed fixing). Ironically, Thailog's presence in the Society, along with Fang "vouching" for him, caused the Redemption Squad to turn down the offer. At Thailog's request, Shari later told him the story of how Goliath failed to bring Coldstone back to the Manhattan Clan. When Shari implied that Goliath's adventure may not have been entirely fruitless, he grew enraged and would have beaten her, but the sun rose and he turned to stone.
In personality Thailog is Goliath's polar opposite: Thoroughly cunning and duplicitous, he will happily betray anybody for his own benefit, and not only does he display a complete lack of the Gargoyle instinct to protect; but actively seeks to inflict pain and suffering. He demonstrates sociopathy to an extent which dwarfs even Demona's, and at times seems completely aware of and at ease with his own evil nature. He also seems to have something of an Oedipus complex; both in his attempts to kill his "fathers", and in his choice for mates (first Demona, who was Goliath's past mate, and then Delilah, a genetic amalgamation of Demona and Elisa). He is a skilled trickster, rivaling Xanatos in his cunning and intellect.
After his escape from the oil rig at Black Rock Point with Xanatos' money, Thailog adopted the human alias of Alexander Thailog, a reclusive financier whom nobody has ever seen. In this guise he co-founded Nightstone Unlimited with Demona, and he now presumably uses this name in his current position as Nightstone's CEO. He chose the name "Alexander" as an homage to Alexander the Great, the famous Macedonian king who conquered a great portion of the known world in the 4th century B.C., as an echo of his own ambitions.
Thailog runs Nightstone Unlimited by speaker-phone, memo, and e-mail to keep his employees from learning his true nature. The purple Gargoyle does share one personality trait in common with his father Goliath- a fondness for stories and knowledge. He "encourages" his Illuminati assistant Shari to tel him stories, particularly about the other Gargoyles.
Powers and Abilities
Physically, Thailog is a perfect clone of Goliath, sharing the same silhouette, prodigious strength, and voice; although with altered pigmentation and markings because of his artificially accelerated aging. As a result, his hair is white, his eyes are red, his skin is a dark purple/indigo shade, and his wing membranes are pale lilac. He often wears battle armor and a helmet, which he obtained after his escape from Black Rock Point, though at times he has been seen without the armor or in other clothing such as a Roman toga. Thailog's intellect and personality are the products of an artificially accelerated growth process and subliminal programming by Anton Sevarius and David Xanatos.
- Thailog's name is "Goliath" spelled backwards, with the "th" reversed. This was later parodied on an episode of Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command, 'Clone Rangers', wherein evil, conniving child Buzz clone Zzub mocked his creator Zurg for merely spelling the hero's name backwards. The episode was written by Greg Weisman.
- In "Future Tense" of 2034, Brooklyn claims that Thailog was, at some point during the resistance, killed by Xanatos' forces. Although as part of Puck's ruse, this claim is dubious, since Puck was not yet aware of Demona and Thailog's romantic relationship until Goliath brought it up; to maintain the illusion of Demona and Brooklyn's romantic relationship, Puck may have simply claimed that Thailog had died.
Clones that share Thailog's physical features but with cybernetic enhancements form a portion of Xanatos' army.
- In The Goliath Chronicles, Thailog did resurface, succumbing to a degenerative disease like the other clones. Thailog schemed to get the antidote for himself, but failed and finally fell victim to the affliction. He and the other clones turned to stone permanently. The Manhattan clan honored their fallen comrades by placing them atop a building in New York City.
- Thailog chose the same first name for himself, as Xanatos and Fox did for their son.
