Peter Maza is a former police officer of the 23rd Precinct. He is Diane Maza's husband and the father of Elisa Maza.

History[]

When Peter was a boy in Arizona, he performed a ceremonial dance of gratitude in honor of Coyote, a shapeshifting Kachina and trickster figure, at the insistence of his father, Carlos Maza. Peter wore a Coyote mask in the dance.

In 1960, Peter left home for New York City, against Carlos's wishes.[1]

When his daughter Elisa was shot, Peter, his wife, Diane Maza, and their son, Derek Maza, all came to her bedside.[2]

When Derek considered leaving the police force, Elisa went to Peter for advice. Peter shared Elisa's desire for Derek to remain on the force, but Derek left "the family business" and became a personal bodyguard and pilot to David Xanatos.[3] Peter later expresses his concern over Derek's disappearance but is reassured by Elisa and eventually reintroduced to his son, now a Mutate calling himself Talon. He also meets, the rest of the Mutates: Maggie the Cat, Claw, and Fang.[4]

While visiting his younger daughter, Beth Maza, at Flagstaff University, Peter is confronted by his past when he and Beth—along with Elisa, Goliath, Angela, and Bronx (who arrive as part of the "Avalon World Tour" arc)—encounter Coyote, who takes the appearance of a young Peter. Peter does not recognize the resemblance and refuses to believe that Coyote is real, but when Xanatos tries to force the trickster (who is one of Oberon's Children) to grant him immortality, Peter helps to thwart Xanatos by donning the Coyote mask and performing the ceremonial dance, as he did in his youth. Before disappearing, Coyote reveals that he and Peter have been connected since that first dance. Seeing for himself that Coyote is real, Peter finally acknowledges that his father was not entirely wrong to hold on to tradition and apologizes at Carlos's grave, expressing regret over not having reconciled with him before it was too late.[1]

Peter's Native American tribe is inconsistent, as admitted on the "Ask Greg" forums. Greg Weisman has said that they believed "maza" to mean "iron" in one of the languages of either the Sioux or Navajo people, but that Elisa "seems to be Hopi or Zuni in the series."[5] Flagstaff, Arizona, and the surrounding area (where the episode Cloud Fathers takes place) is "home to the Navajo, Hopi, Havasupai, Kaibab-Paiute and Hualapai peoples."[6]
