Gargates are an order of animals composed of two families, gargoyles and gargoyle beasts. There are at least one type of Dragon. The term "gargate" was first coined by Dr. Anton Sevarius, though the dragon known as Wyvern has called their kind the "Stone-Flesh". While mythological information on the first gargoyle derives from Ancient Roman texts, gargates historically predate humans and may have lived alongside the prehistoric beasts such as the mammoth and the mastodon. It is believed that gargates (not gargoyle beasts) sought out cliffs and ridges for homes, due to their winged anatomy, much like eagles. With the adaptation of human-built stone tools, gargates became more inclined to live in areas feared by men, such as extremely high mountains as a means of protecting themselves during their vulnerable daytime state. Anatomically gargates are much more well off than humans. Having developed the ability to store solar energy during stone sleep, gargates do not have to gorge themselves to sustain the muscle needed for gliding but they still need food for nourishment. Their increased strength when enraged may be linked to a much larger adrenal gland, used to power extended bursts of strength.
History[]
The exact origins of gargates lie so far back in the mists of time that we have no certain details as to how they came about. However, evidences have suggests that they are descended from reptiles of the Paleozoic or Mesozoic Eras, possibly pterosaurs or the "mammal-like reptiles." They first originated on Earth's super-continent of Pangaea. It is certain, at the least, that they are native to this world rather than extra-terrestrials, and that they arose through the same natural causes as mammals, rather than being the creation of magic.
Dr. Anton Sevarius planned to mutate Robyn Canmore using a gargate mutagen garnered from Angela's DNA.
Description[]
In addition to their striking property, the stone sleep, the Gargates are also characterized by the fact that they have a high difference in their appearance in groups. They also have six limbs, even if the Gargoyle Beasts have only four externally, X-rays can still show remnants of atrophied wings.
They also have a very long reproductive cycle, lay eggs and also suckle their young, which indicates more strongly an inheritance with early mammals. All extant species exhibit a high level of intelligence and a strong sense of smell.
